The Parish Of Caverswall

The Parish Survey of 1839

A survey of the land within the parish was completed in 1839. The survey was probably carried out in response to the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836. The Act removed the requirement for people to pay their parish tithes with goods and replaced this with payments of money. The survey records the names of the landowners, the details of the land and property they owned and the names of any sub-tenants. Over 1500 individual plots are listed including many field names now lost in the mists of time like the Devils Nook, Lower Skinners Grief and the Tip Cat Field.

The original records have been entered into a database. Please enter a name and select either Landowner, tenant or plot description and then press the search button.
