The research work was carried out by Kevin Salt who has kindly given his consent for the transcriptions to be published here. The ravages of time have taken their toll on some of the memorials and in some cases they are impossible to read. These inscriptions are from the churchyard only and do not include any from the village cemetery.

Erected to the memory of Sarah Allen, wife of Joseph Allen, late of Caverswall, who died July 30th 1830, aged 36 years. Also Ann, daughter of the above, who died March 18th 1849, aged 29 years. Also James Allen, son of the above, who died March 26th 1849, aged 27 years. The Lord did please to end their time, when thay was ….. …. and in their prime, and take ………….. of rest …………….. think it best.

[In memory of] Mary Arblaster late of Spot in the parish of Stone who departed this life the 22nd day of June 1813, aged 62 years.

Sacred to the memory of Joseph Austin of this town who died 17th March 1820, aged 81[?] years. Stop passenger and read the instructing page, What or thy fame thy …… or thy age Death’s mighty arm shall break thy prison down, and speed thy spirits flight to realms unknown By faith and hope those unknown realms explore, oft try thy wings and upward learn to sore Be dead to earth and sin dwell much on …….. , then calmly wait for death and bravely die.

In memory of Mary, daughter of Thomas and Sabarah Bentley of Mear Lane, who died 3rd [or possibly 5th] Jan: 1833, aged 24 years. The pains of childbirth overpowered me, I did submit my life to death you see, as my creator through his heavenly love: took me to rest with the blessed saints above. Also to the said Thomas Bentley who died Jany. 27th 1847, aged 65 yes. Also Sabarah, his wife, who died Dec 18th 1852, aged 75 years. George, their son, died April 25th 1852, aged 47 years.

In memory of Charles Brassington Catcut Lodge in this parish who departed this life Janry. 9th 1850, aged 83 years. What is man an emty bubble, floating on a sea of trouble,What is life a dream of sorrow, a little day without a morrow. Also Elizabeth, the wife of Charles Brassington, who departed this life July 24th 1817, aged 68 years.

Sacred to the memory of Mary Anne, daughter of Samuel and Mary Bullock of this parish, who departed this life Decr 9th 1833, aged 13 months. Also John, son of the above, who departed this life Octr 31st 1836, aged 2 years and 8 months. Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of God. Mary, wife of Samuel Bullock, who departed this life Jany. 12th 1848, aged 36 years. Also John Knight, their son, who departed this life April 17th ….

Ralph and Joseph, sons of William and Elizabeth B[oulton] of Stone in this county who were born March 18th 1807. Ralph died February 7th 1808. Joseph died March 17th 1808. .. Lord let him do what seemeth him good.

In memory of William Bradbury late of Dilhorne who died Sep 9th 1832, aged 44 years. Also Thomas, son of William and Sarah Bradbury, died June 12th 1834, aged 9 years. Also Mary, daughter of Wm and Sarah Bradbury, died April 8th 1836, aged 19 years. Also Sarah, wife of the above William Bradbury, who died March 9th 1870, aged 54 years.

In memory of Zechauiah Bradbury, late of Hardywick in this parifh, who died 20th Sept 1811, aged 65 years. In memory of Mary his wife who died 15th Feb 1809, aged 62 years. Also of Thomas, son of the aforesaid ……. 1803[?], aged 29 years. George their son died 17th August 1804, aged 16 years.

Here lieth the body of Thomas Boulton of The Meir who died the 8th day of May 1776, aged 18 years.

In memory of Mary, wife of Peter Burgess of Cookshill, died March 1st 1854, aged 54 years. Also Peter Burgess who died Decr 24th 1874, aged 91 years. Also James Burgess, son of the above, who died Nov 30th 1896, aged 74 years. Thy will be done.

In memory of John Bentley of Hulme in this parish who died May 4th 1847, aged 78 years. In memory of Thomas Bentley of Hulme who died 13th March 1822, aged 79 years. Dear children do not mourn for me, but serve your God both night and day Your time on earth will soon be spent, be sure in time for to repent Here lieth the body of Francis, the wife of Thos Bentley of Hulme who died 16th Aug 1808, aged 69ys. Dear husband weep for me no more, nor children fhed a tear For I am gone but juft before, unto my saviour dear. Here lieth the body of Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas & Francis Bentley of Hulme, who died the 20th of Sept 1786, aged 16 years. Lo’ here the till trumpets found, and Chrift for me doth call and then I hope to rife again, and die no more at all. In memory of Elizabeth, the daughter of Richard and Lydia Bentley, who died 30th May 1822, aged 5 years. Once lovely and dearly belov’d, this grave doth an infant inclose Whose spirit we trust is remov’d, from pain to eternal repose.

In memory of William Bradbury late of this town who died 1st Aug 1837, aged 55 years. A loving friend [?] husband dear, a tender parent lieth here Great is the ………we sustain, thro’ Christ we hope …………….. is gain Also Ann wife of the above who died July 10th 1842, aged 66 years. Reig.. to God we here to each commend, a tender mother and a ……….. friend. Bleft are the children who such mothers have, as fmile in death and triumph o’er the grave.

Josiah, son of William and Ann Bradbury of Caverswall who died ….

In memory of Margaret, wife of William Bradbury of the Bank House, who departed this life Febry 5th 1860, aged 57 years. Be ye therefore ready also for the son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. Luke XII c40v Also of the above William Bradbury who died Jan 6th 1886, aged 80 years. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. Hebrews iv9.

Within this vault are deposited the remains of William Turner Burgess, son of John and Mary Burgess of The Dovehouse in this parish, who died June 14th 1844, aged 17 years. Erected in memory of John Burgess of The Dovehouse, in this parish, who departed this life June 16th 1849, aged 67 years.

Here lieth the body of Benjamin Boulton late of Cookshill who died 6th May 1811, aged 58 years. Here lieth the body of Mary, wife of Benjamin Boulton, who died 5th Jany 1851, aged 86 years. Reader, remember thou must die, and turn to dust as well as I Repent thy own misconduct past, and thou it be happy at the last.

Beneath are entombed the remains of Mary, wife of Thomas Burgess of Dimsdale, who departed this life 4th February 185[?]7, aged 54 years.

Sacred to the memory of Samuel Burgess late of Chapel Chorlton who died 15th March 1840, aged 11 years. ‘Oft as the bell with solem toll, speaks the departure of a soul let each one ask himself am I, prepar’d should I be call’d to die Then leaving all I lov’d below, to God’s tribunal I must go Must here the judge pronounce my fate, and fix my everlasting state

Sacred to the memory of Mary, the wife of Joseph Boulton (of Cookshill), who died Oct 5th 1854, aged 51 years. The hour of my departure comes, I hear the voice that calls me home At last O Lord let troubles cease and let thy servant die in peace. Also the aforesaid Joseph Boulton who died Dec 5th 1865, aged 61 years.

Here lieth interr’d ye remains of Robert Boardman late of Badderley Green who departed this life the 16th day of May in the year of our Lord 1777, aged 75 years. In love and peace he spent his life, juft to his children and his wife To all mankind he was sincere, and loved to keep his conscience clear It’s hoped he’ll rife again with Joy ………….

In memory of Elizabeth the wife of William Cooper of The Furnace who died Feby. 3rd 1825, aged 22. Time swept by his o’erwhelming tide, my faithful partner from my side, and you of yours depriv’d may be, as unexpectedly as me, set then your hearts on things above, death soon will end all mortal love.

Errected in the memory of Samuel Cooper (late of Meir) who died Jany. 1st 1858, aged 40 years. Patient beneath his long distress, submissive and resigned; At God’s command he rose to bliss, and left his griefs behind. Also Harriet, wife of the above who died Jany. 27th 1876, aged 51 years. She fell asleep in Jesus.

Erected in memory of Hannah Foster, late Cooper, of Normacott Grange who died the 11th day of Sept. 1859 in the 74th year of her age. Also of George Cooper, late of Normacott Grange, who died November 25th 1853, aged 64 years. Also Betty, wife of……….

In memory of the three children issue of George and Betty Cooper of Normacott Grange. Hannah died 16th May 1822 aged 10 years, William died 11th June 1822 aged 2 years, George died 25th Decr 1823 aged 13 years.

Here lieth interr’d the body of Robert Cowper late of this parish, who departed this life the 23rd day of March in the year of Our Lord 1749, aged 36 years. Also the body of Mary, wife of the s. Robert Cowper…

Affectionately inscribed to the memory of John Cope of Park Hall Farm, in this parish, who died July 28th 1844, aged 31 years. When blooming youth is snatch’d away by death’s relentless hand, Our hearts the mournful tribute pay, which pity must demand.

To the memory of Richard Cooper of this town who died 5th May 1808, aged 70 years. Mary his wife who died 11th June 1831, aged 80 years. Also of 4 children issues of Richard and Mary Cooper all died young.

Sacred to the memory of William Clarke, gent, of Caverfall and Mary his wife, eldeft daughter of Nathaniel Philips of Heath House gent, he ob: the 23rd day of Decr 1775, aged 85 years. She ob: the 3rd of March 1774. This monument was erected by their only surviving daughter in testimony of the affections she bears to the memory of the best of parents, and that her remains may be reposited in the fame vault. Here likewise lie the remains of Richard Hill of Stallington esqr who married Mary Clarke daughter of Wiliam and Mary Clarke aforefaid, he ob: the 2nd of April 1794, aged 64. And Mary his wife ob: July the 7th 1802, aged 69, leaving one son Richard Clarke Hill esq of Stallington who died Aug 8th 1852, aged 70. Here also lie the remains of Sarah, wife of Richard Clarke Hill of Stallington, second daughtr of Thomas Birds of Eyam in the county of Derby, she died May 13th 1817, aged 34 years. Here also lie the remains of Elizabeth daughter of Richd Clarke Hill and Sarah his wife, who died July 6th 1813, aged 19 days. Also of Richard Clarke Hill their son who died Sepr 30th 1816, aged 17 weeks.

Here lieth the body of William Cotton of Cellarhead in this parish who died 12th March 1785, aged 32 years. Underneath here lieth the body of Ann, wife of Edward Cotton, who died 16th Feb 1800, aged 66y.

In memory of William Cooper of Ashbourne, formerly of Caverswall Park, who died Jan 13th 1861, aged 81 years. Also of Betsey, wife of William Cooper, who died Aug 6th 1848, aged 59 years.

Sacred to the memory of Joseph Dale of The Blythe, who died March 11th 1879, aged82 years. Sacred are the dead which dieth in The Lord. Mary Ann, wife of Joseph Dale of The Blythe, in the parish , who died Oct 21st 1854, aged 53 years. Adieu my kindred near and dear, we might dwell forever here, come fix your thoughts on heavenly bliss, where Christ the blest redeemer is.

Here lieth the body of John Dawson of Hulme who departed this life July 5th 1770, aged 56 years. Also Sarah, wife of the abovesaid, who departed this life March the 28th 1795, aged 78 years.

Here lieth the body of Dorothy, wife of Thomas Dawson of Hulme, who departed this life Jany. 23rd 1789, aged 41 years. The best of wives the ground encloseth here, faithful and loving to her husband dear, Great was his loss for her eternal gain, yet hopes in Christ that they shall meet again.

Sacred to the memory of Myra Matilda, daughter of John and Kitty Forrester of Adderley Green in this parish, who departed this life Decr 20th 1859, aged 7 years. Also Felix their son who departed this life Septr 6th 1835, aged 6 months.

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Forrester, the son of Charles and Sarah Forrester of Adderley Green in this parish, who departed this life July 31st 1851, aged 28 years. The blooming flower an emblem shows of mortal mans decayman like a flower no sooner blows but fades and dies away.

Sacred to the memory of Charles Forrester of Adderley Green born Sept 21st 1800[?], died March 1st, 187.[?] Also Amelia Jane, wife of George Forrester ……….. aged 65 years. In affectionate remembrance of Charles Thomas, son of George and Amelia Jane Forrester of Adderley Green, who died October …. 1859, aged 7[?] years. Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of God.

This stone is placed here by the sorrowing friends of John Garter who died March 3rd 1810, aged 52 years. Dear reader tis a serious thing to die, thou soon must find it so as well as I, If for our works we bliss or woe receive, dear reader tis a serious thing to live.

Sacred to the memory of Isaac Gallimore of Butfields in this parish who died 16th Novr 1825, aged 60 years.

Also of Hannah, daughter of William and Hannah Heath, who died Octr 17th 1847, aged 32 years. Also of Joseph, son of William and Hannah Heath, who died Octr 24th 1848, aged 35 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, even so saith the spirit for they rest from their labours.

Erected in the memory of Thomas Heath of Caverswall who died March 1st 1859, aged 54 years. For I know that my redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth, and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. Job. XIX c25-26. Erected in memory of Lydia, wife of Danial Hassal of Fox Earth, who departed this life June 2nd 1852, aged 58 years. A tender partner and a loving mother, hard to find out such another.. In memory of Daniel Hassal who departed this life April 3rd 1865, aged 74 years. Blessed are they who keep His testimonies and that seek Him with their whole heart. Psalm CXIX verse 2.

Sacred to the memory of John Hurst of Dividy Lane in this parish who departed this life Novr 13th 1850, aged 57 years. Here lies a husband who was kind and of a tender loving mind, He’d liv’d a life of faithful love, in hope to live in heaven above.

Here lieth the body of George Hollins, late of the Divedale Lane in this parish who departed this life April 23rd 1787, aged 54 years. An honest man in the ground encloseth here, faithful and loving to his wife and children dear, so farewell my wife and children all, and give hear when the Lord doth call.
